10 Doctor Who Storylines That Were Suddenly Abandoned
6. What Happened To Ace?
The other big casualty of Doctor Who's cancellation in 1989 was the unresolved mystery of what happened to companion Ace. While the Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor popped up again in the 1996 TV movie to transition into Paul McGann's Eighth, he was travelling alone in the TARDIS at this point. There were rumours that Sophie Aldred might reprise her role of Ace in the Sarah Jane Adventures but the tragic death of Elizabeth Sladen cut that series - and any return of Ace - short. The plans for a series 27 would have seen Ace leave the Doctor to join the Timelord Academy on Gallifrey. The cancellation of the show prevented that from happening. Just what happened to her after Survival makes her one of the show's biggest dropped sub plots. Ace can always return in the main show; with Elizabeth Sladen gone, Doctor Who needs another returning face for the classic era and Sophie Aldred has voiced her enthusiasm for playing her iconic character again, suggesting that while her storyline remains unresolved, there is hope for a resolution more than 25 years after her last onscreen appearance.
A writer for Whatculture since May 2013, I also write for TheRichest.com and am the TV editor and writer for Thedigitalfix.com . I wrote two plays for the Greater Manchester Horror Fringe in 2013, the first an adaption of Simon Clark's 'Swallowing A Dirty Seed' and my own original sci-fi horror play 'Centurion', which had an 8/10* review from Starburst magazine! (http://www.starburstmagazine.com/reviews/eventsupcoming-genre-events/6960-event-review-centurion) I also wrote an episode for online comedy series Supermarket Matters in 2012. I aim to achieve my goal for writing for television (and get my novels published) but in the meantime I'll continue to write about those TV shows I love!
