4. The Ida Funkhouser Roadside Memorial (Season 6, Episode 3)

Samples are a custom at most food joints. People take a bite of 1 or 2 and make their decision. Vegetating any further than this may be deemed selfish and time-wasting if there's a big queue behind you. When waiting for an eternity behind the priceless Robin Bartlett at an ice-cream counter, Larry doubles down and tears her a new one for holding up the line. His general point here is understandable but that doesn't stop the agents of fate from handing him yet another bad hand.

In the meantime, the creative team's favourite punching bag, Marty Funkhouser (played as always with a perfect mix of comedy and tragedy by the late Bob Einstein) suffers another death in the family, his beloved mother Ida. As is customary throughout Marty's appearances, Larry must ruin any and all familial proceedings, this time stealing flowers from Mrs Funkhouser's memorial. It's a scummy thing to do and yet another great example of what a despicable jerk Larry can be.

The episode also boasts one of the series' finest zingers. When recounting the ice-cream disaster to Loretta and Cheryl, Larry explains, "She's always told the customer is always right, and usually, the customer is a moron and an a***ole."

Truer words have never been spoken for those of us who've worked in retail.
