This black comedy masterclass finds a goldmine of laughs in the horrendous demise of Larry's hapless therapist, the very ironically named Dr Bright. Steve Coogan is first class as the shrink who gives Larry dreadful advice on his desperate attempts to get his marriage to Cheryl back on track.

Larry and Cheryl's split was a contentious arc for many viewers. This episode provides an especially cruel glimmer of hope they'd reunite. However, in typical Larry fashion, his plans blow up in his and everyone else's face. Coogan's hilariously hopeless Bright botches a doomed from the start fake mugging intended to paint Larry as a hero. A subsequent spell behind bars ruins his life, something Larry clearly couldn't care less about.

The level of selfishness and deception on display from Larry may be the peak of his cruelty in the series, painting him in an almost evil light by the end of the episode. Of the many classic guest stars, Coogan wins the race with a miserable one-off character who's misfortunes had a wide-reaching impact on the show well into the next season.
