10 Game Of Thrones Characters We Never Saw Die
4. Stannis Baratheon
Last Seen:
In Season 5, Episode 10, leaning against a tree with a bleeding leg after losing the Battle of Winterfell, telling Brienne to "do her duty" after she passed a sentence of death on him for his blood magic murder of his own brother.
Could He Still Be Alive?
The answer to that largely rests on the honourable Brienne's interpretation of "doing her duty". We saw her accuse Stannis of crimes that he most definitely did, and him confess to them. We saw her pass her own death sentence on him and raise her sword to strike the fatal blow and saw Stannis remind her of her duty.
But was appointing herself judge, jury and executioner actually the dutiful thing for Brienne to do? Might we never have seen the death blow because Brienne thought better of it? Might she perhaps have realised that her place was never to take revenge for Renly but to fulfill her promise to Catelyn to protect her still living daughters? The framing of this episode's story and direction certainly calls her out for putting personal vengeance first and thus missing Sansa's signal for help. Maybe Brienne came to realise this before striking Stannis down.
On the other hand, the original script for these scenes did spell out pretty clearly that Stannis dies in this scene. So, even if we didn't actually see it happen, there's a pretty strong chance that the writers intend this to be his death scene.
