10 Greatest TV Series Finales Of All Time

1. Six Feet Under

Six Feet Under was long past its peak when the finale arrived in 2005. Once a darkly humorous, macabre look at family life and relationships, the series took a turn for the worse in late season 3. Instead of the initial wit and charm, the writers took pleasure almost exclusively in making their lead characters suffer (David's ludicrous season 4 kidnapping being the biggest offender).

2 episodes on from the surprise death of Nate and those he left behind remain deep in grief. Instead of continuing the misery, the episode focuses on the remaining Fisher family members finally letting go of their self-destructive habits. After an uplifting hour of characters finding themselves and making peace, the series ends on a truly inspired note.

Creator Alan Ball took the series' obsession with death to its grandest conclusion with a montage of flash forwards. Played out to Sia's Breathe Me, we see the diverse range of deaths the cast will suffer in the decades to come. Some deaths are pleasant, some brutal but all are deeply affecting. An astoundingly emotional farewell to one of TV's most twisted dramas, Six Feet Under remains the gold standard of finales 15 years later.
