The Mystery

Blake’s 7 was cult sci-fi back in the days when such a thing barely existed, and despite suffering from a low-budget it featured great characters and gripping storylines. The show was regularly on the brink of being cancelled throughout its four-season run, especially after the actor playing Blake quit after season two.

The show kept going, though, and when cancellation was threatened again at the end of season four the showrunner decided to end on an almighty cliffhanger to entice viewers back. The final episode ends with Blake’s reappearance, but he’s soon shot dead by crew member Avon who mistakes him for a traitor. Then the rest of the gang are seemingly killed one by one by troops until Avon is surrounded. He smiles and the show cuts to credits as shots ring out.

This scene was shot in such a way the characters could be resurrected if the show came back, but the BBC pulled the plug. They duly did so, but fans were still left clamouring for an answer.

The Answer

An official sequel novel called Afterlife would later explain that Avon and Vila survived the shootout – without explaining how – and wind up on another adventure.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
