10 Incredibly Subtle Jokes From The Simpsons You Might Have Missed

2. Satan & Skittlebrau ('Bart Star')

When Homer becomes the coach of a pee-wee football team, his decision to make Bart their star player causes a stir of animosity between the team- as well as between father and son. It also creates a slightly subversive sight gag involving the Flanders boys. As they huddle before a game, we can see the numbers on the front of the players' shirts. Rod's jersey number is 66. Todd's number is 6. And they just so happen to be standing together... The episode also contains one of Homer's many missed marketing opportunities, as shown in the following exchange: Homer: I'm feeling kinda low, Apu. Got any of that beer that has candy floating in it? You know, Skittlebrau? Apu: Such a beer does not exist, sir. I think you must have dreamed it. Homer: Oh. Well, then just give me a six-pack and a couple of bags of Skittles. But the joke doesn't end there. Fast forward fourteen series to the episode 'Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo'. When the Simpsons are shopping in the 33ยข store, Marge pushes her trolley past a row of shelves packed with crates labelled Skittlebrau. Surely it's time for the rainbow- flavoured beer to make a characteristically low-key comeback?
