Rick’s kindest act is also by far his most heroic and noble deed. We’ve seen Rick suicidal, and we know he’s a nihilist, but seeing him prepared to trade his own life for his grandson was still a heart-wrenching moment.
His would-be final words of "Be good, Morty. Be better than me" really seal the deal too.
It’s not just that he’s sacrificing himself to save Morty, it’s that he doesn’t see it as a sacrifice. For all he lords his intelligence over people sometimes and often belittles those around him, Rick simply doesn’t think his life is worth much.
It’s easy for him to give it up for Morty, because he views himself as a lost cause, while Morty is untapped potential.
We forget sometimes just how damaged Rick is. It’s easy to laugh at his sarcasm, to admire or possibly even relate to his apparent disdain for the rest of humanity. It’s important to remember that he’s not the hero, and he’s not supposed to be. The show likes to remind us of that from time to time, and ironically they remind us here by showing him at his most heroic.
