10 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Static Shock

2. The Show Won Some Very Nice Awards

Over the course of its four years of life, Static Shock was nominated for an Annie Award, three Daytime Emmys, a Motion Picture Sound Editor award, and a Humanitas Prize in Children's Animation. That's not too bad for what was meant to be a simple show to fill some time in Kids WB's schedule.

Most notably of these was the prestigious Humanitas Award.

The episode that captured the Humanitas was called 'Jimmy', a story about bullying, guns, and trauma. Over the course of the episode, a quiet, shy boy named Jimmy becomes friends with Virgil. However, he is endlessly bullied, capped off by the destruction of a project he had long been working on. In retaliation, he brings a gun to a school dance, threatening his tormentors, but ends up accidentally shooting Virgil's sidekick Richie.

When the episode opens, a traumatized Virgil is working with a psychiatrist to get over the shock of seeing one friend being bullied until he was broken and another being shot, with the story told in flashbacks. It was a powerful, radical moment for a cartoon, yet perfectly captured what would be needed by a teenager who saw such acts of violence, despite being a superhero.
