10 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About X-Men: Evolution
5. The Show Tried To Portray The Morlocks In A More Sympathetic Light
The Morlocks of the X-Men comics have always been an interesting bunch. Depending on storyline needs, they were villains, heroes, or something in between. In essence, the Morlocks were a group of underground-dwelling outcast mutants whose appearance or powers wouldn't let them fit into 'normal' society, where they were generally viewed with fear or hate. Because of this, it wasn't unknown for the comic Morlocks to go above-ground to attack humans or even other regular-looking mutants.
The showrunners made a conscious decision to show them as more sympathetic and likeable characters. Their leader Callisto, often characterized as very dedicated to her people but extremely anti-human, cold, and calculating, was shown from her first appearance as kind and understanding.
She laid out reasonable arguments defending the Morlock way of life and offered shelter to characters whose powers evolved or changed, making them uncomfortable with living at the Xavier School, including main character Spyke.
Several mutants traditionally associated with the Morlocks were changed, making them part of the various heroic X-teams portrayed on the show. For example, Berzerker, a mutant who was killed in the 1986 X-Men comic crossover Mutant Massacre, was 'reborn' as a member of the New Mutants on Evolution.
