10 Moments That Almost Saved True Detective Season 2

5. Shootout In The Train Station

The season finale featured no less than three shootouts throughout its 90 minutes' running time, the first - and best - of which takes place in a new train station after Ray and Ani track down the siblings responsible for the death of Caspere. Taking the place of the brother Lenny, who planned to trade Caspere's tapes with Holloway for cash, Ray elicits a confession from the corrupt cop which Lenny records wearing a wire. But when Holloway reveals that Caspere fathered Lenny's sister Laura he flips, lunging over the bench with a large knife and repeatedly plunging it into Holloway's chest. Lieutenant Burris and other police open fire, and in the ensuing shootout the tape recording is crushed underfoot as civilians attempt to flee the hail of bullets. Ani saves Ray from being either killed or captured, but their chances of convicting the conspirators are lost forever. While the narrative route to this scene might have been tortuous and more than a little contrived, as a tightly constructed set piece there are no real faults to speak of.
