10 Most Inventive Ways That Doctor Who Has Killed Off Its Own Characters
6. Death By Drowning Walking Down The Street (The Shakespeare Code)
They say the pen is mightier than the sword and in The Shakespeare Code the witch-like Carrionites use language as a weapon. This gives the creatures powers which seem like magic to the humans they encounter in Shakespearean England. No-one is safe when these creatures effectively cast spells that can dispatch their victims from anywhere. This leads to the wonderfully inventive death of poor Master of the Revels Lynley. By throwing a spanner into the schemes of the aliens, he is marked for death. Lead Carrionite Lilith steals some of his hair, makes a voodoo doll and then plunges it into a bucket of water. Minding his own business and walking down the street, poor Lynley suddenly finds himself drowning in the open air. As a concept, it's a surprisingly chilling one and a death that no-one can help him from. The Carrionites are a highly inventive adversary from writer Gareth Roberts and it's high time they returned for a rematch.
