The beginning of one of Doctor Who's best Doctor-cum-historical-figure episodes starts rather simply, and that is the beauty of the opening. The Doctor and Amy enter an art gallery to view a Van Gogh exhibit and discover something sinister lurking in one of the paintings. The two go back in time to meet the esteemed artist himself and the simplicity of the sequence is charming, as is the manner in which it provides a bookend to the end of the episode when Vincent is brought to the exhibit. The episode is one of the most emotional Doctor Who has had and the pre-credits sequence provides the episode with a straightforward yet elegant start.
