The Doctor Who title sequence is an iconic and important part of the show. Even casual TV viewers and non-Doctor Who fans are familiar with that time vortex and that famous music beat - at this point, it's just a part of the British consciousness.

As a result, it's always exciting when a brand-new Doctor is about to debut, because most of the time, they'll bring a brand-new title sequence along with them.

This was the case back in the early 2000s, and in the run-up to the Ninth Doctor's much-anticipated revival series, there was a lot of discussion about what his title sequence might look - and sound - like.

This led to a downright weird rumour that heavy metal band Slipknot was "in talks" to record that all-important theme tune. Apparently, the members of the band were big Doctor Who fans, and they even dedicated a song from their then-upcoming album (Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses) to the show.

In the end though, this never happened, and it was composer Murray Gold who arranged the theme tune, just like he did for the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors. And what a cracking job he did.

Weirdly though, Slipknot actually made a creative contribution to Doctor Who around a decade after this rumour did the rounds. For the 2015 episode Before The Flood, the band's lead singer, Corey Taylor, provided the roar sound effect for the Fisher King.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
