10 Most Ridiculous Doctor Who Rumours Ever

7. Rory Is The Master

Every single time a new series is about to air, there are always a load of rumours about how the Master, the Valeyard, or even the Rani could return - rumours that are false most of the time, or all of the time, in the case of those last two.

One of the most normal and unassuming characters who's been subjected to these rumours over the years is Rory, a companion who the Doctor Who fanbase was quite suspicious of after his first episode - The Eleventh Hour - aired back in 2010.

This was all down to a mistake on Rory's hospital ID badge, which states that it was issued in 1990. It's an easy-to-miss detail, but this date made zero sense considering Rory's age, as well as the year in which the episode was set.

But this couldn't just be a production error, could it? Oh no - it had to mean that Rory wasn't the normal bloke he seemed to be.

From here, Rory was rumoured to be the Master, an evil time-traveller, Rassilon, or even a fugitive from the Time War. These "Rory isn't Rory" rumours then persisted for a few more years, and while it would've been hilarious to learn that this bumbling nurse was actually the Doctor's arch-nemesis... he wasn't.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
