7. Data Meets McCoy - Encounter At Farpoint

Encounter at Farpoint is the introduction to the Next Generation and it is, objectively, meh. To be very fair, the effects are superb and the story is filled with enough interesting notes to capture the attention of new fans the world over. But the execution of the episode is just full of the usual issues that face most pilots - stiff acting, undefined characters and an insufficient amount of action.

However, it is evident that, faith in the new cast aside, everyone knew all of the above could be the case. Gene Roddenberry was against crossovers initially, so that the Next Generation could establish itself on its own two feet. However, well into the production of the episode, Gene met with DeForest Kelley and discussed the new show.

Anecdotally, Kelley was one of those who had been a bit concerned (by all accounts, that man never got annoyed with anything) with the idea of a new show replacing the Original Series' cast. However, Roddenberry wanted to have a connection between the two series - just a connection, and then allow the Next Generation to thrive.

Seeking and gaining Kelley's permission, this short scene was added, immediately raising the quality of the episode overall. To have Data and McCoy walking along the corridors, so similar to the aged doctor and another logical being, is soft and pure. McCoy, ever the pleasant curmudgeon, grumbles about the perception of his age. But, before he disembarks, he imparts his wisdom to Data - treat her like a lady and she'll always bring you home.
