3. The Day of the Doctor- 12.80 Million

The 50th anniversary episode was always going to be a significant event, and the 12.8 Million viewers who tuned in got something truly special. The episode is perhaps unfairly placed at third on the list, as those numbers don't take into consideration how many people took to the cinemas to watch it.

The reunion with David Tennant and Billie Piper in a 'Roseish' role was highly advertised, but the episode had so much more to give. The revelation of how William Hurt's version came to be known as 'The War Doctor' was brilliantly written and acted by the veteran actor, while the return of old enemy the Zygons was a neat touch.

The highlight though was the shock return of the other great Doctor, Tom Baker, in the guise as a Curator who may or may not be a later version of The Doctor. His dialogue with Matt Smith is a little fragmented, but just seeing him on screen one last time in the role he made famous brought a cheer and a tear from many a classic Who fan.
