10 Netflix Original Shows Cancelled After One Season

2. The Get Down

Created by acclaimed filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and featuring a cast including the likes of Justice Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jimmy Smits, The Get Down was a roaring musical drama chronicling the rise of hip-hop and disco in 70s New York.

Noted for its ambitious scope and historical significance, the series' first season was split into two parts, ending after twelve episodes and costing an eye-watering $120 million to produce.

Behind-the-scenes, creative differences had slowed production early on, and it's said the series was only split into two to accommodate some changes in the writing room.

Despite the hardships, Luhrmann later went on record to enthusiastically proclaim:

To be honest, we have already developed the opening of the next season. Sony and Netflix have been very driven about having a second season. There has been no question about that. They really want it.

When the show was axed, though, he took to social media to say The Get Down was cancelled because he couldn't commit to it anymore, though it's fair to say the budget and creative friction had something to do with its final fate, too.
