10 Problems With Constantine That Got It Cancelled
6. Not Being Supernatural
That major change might very well be down to the how the genre that Hellblazer helped define has evolved over the years. It was John Constantine's influence that practically set the rules for modern occult detective fiction, and you can see that influence in basically everything in that sub-genre that's come since. Especially in Supernatural. The constant stream of devilish baddies to deal with, the sexual tension, the propensity towards suits and tan trenchcoats? Yeah, almost everything the Winchester brothers have dealt with in their ten seasons (wow, has it really been ten seasons?) has been very much inspired by aspects of the Hellblazer mythology. Constantine, meanwhile, tossed aside the Hellblazer influence in favour of chasing the Supernatural one. That's why it makes John more of a loveable rogue than an actual bastard, why it centralises his relationship with Zed and why Manny is basically Castiel. But Constantine isn't Supernatural and, well, Supernatural already exists. We don't need another.
