10 Problems With Constantine That Got It Cancelled

3. No Politics

One of the most surprising things about reading the early Hellblazer comics is quite how politically charged they were. An early story line from Jamie Delano's run, written at the height of Thatcher's government in the UK, had John Constantine fighting Tories who were demons literally stealing the souls of the working classes. Very subtle. Something so brazen coming out of a major US publisher €“ and something so specific to British culture coming out in a different country €“ remains a coup. But Constantine's lefty leanings have shot through the entire run of the comics, speaking to his empathetic nature that leads him to helping those in need, even when he'd rather not. The Constantine TV show, meanwhile, was loathe to mention any hot-button topics. The politics are yet another thing that differentiate John Constantine from other occult detectives, and losing that meant he lost one of his defining characteristics.
