4. Frank's Plans Shouldn't Always Work
Part of the joy of watching House Of Cards is watching Frank Underwood setting up all his various plans, keeping multiple plates spinning at a time as he plots to make everything go exactly as he wants. Even with a couple of setbacks along the way, he usually succeeds in getting exactly what he wants, the dominoes falling in a most satisfying manner. That's also one of the major problems with House Of Cards. There's rarely any sense of threat. Once the first season is over and Frank has gotten away with all of his terrible acts in pursuit of becoming Vice President, the audience is reassured that everything is always going to go his way, and there will never be any comeuppance. A lack of narrative tension makes the show kind of boring to watch at times. You're never worried that Frank will succeed, because he always does. Cliffhangers will be resolved instantly. In the end, he will be in the exact position he predicted at the start of the season. Not a lot of drama in that.
