5. The Asides
One aspect of the show's setup that separates Miranda from other shows I've watched is the breaking of the fourth wall, or the addressing of the audience. A lot of the jokes on the show get to hit twice- once when Miranda is interacting with the other characters and again when she turns to the audience and admits a lie or a fib that the other characters are unaware of. A personal favorite is a moment where Miranda argues with Stevie and a customer that she's been on loads of dates, only to the turn to the audience and whisper into the camera, "I've literally been on one." The delivery and the relationship this creates with the audience is hard to pull off, but Miranda does it incredibly well. In later seasons, she can do so much as turn to the audience and raise her eyebrows to elaborate on a joke that exists in the world of the show. It makes the audience feel like a part of the show, along with the use of a studio audience who also react to Miranda's aside. She knows she has an audience and we're just simply enjoying her day with her as she occasionally confides in us comments that generally lead to hilarity.
