6. The Call Back To The Classic Sitcom
Miranda is a three-camera sitcom with a studio audience. The sets aren't fancy and there aren't usually elaborate cut away scenes in fancy settings. The simplicity of the set up makes for a character-heavy show and a very classic sitcom feel. This vibe is also helped of course by the use of slapstick humour (including the occasional fart joke and falling-off-the-chair gag) which, in moderation, can be surprisingly hilarious. The sitcom takes advantage of every kind of joke so the slapstick gags feel warranted and almost always hit home. There's one particular episode that relies heavily on blocking and characters entering and leaving a room so as not to ever interact with each other. While Miranda tries to keep a suitor out of her hair by locking him in the bathroom, Tilly's fiancé comes onto Miranda and waits for her in the bedroom, when, of course, Gary arrives! Miranda must keep them all from seeing each other and try and avoid confrontation (and nudity) from most of them. The farcical humor is brilliantly used- there's even a moment in the series where Miranda, frustrated with the way things are going, comments "I feel like I'm in a farce!" which adds another type of humor of the meta variety. I'd be very happy calling Miranda a revamp of the classic sitcom, which is both refreshing and comfortable.
