3. Inventing Anna (2022)
It’s the latest series to take the internet by storm, sitting confidently around the top of Netflix’s trending list for a few weeks now. The series tells the story of Anna Sorokin, a fraudster who convinced New York’s elite that she was a wealthy heiress, in turn scamming them out of thousands of dollars.
Using the name Anna Delvey, she swanned around living a life of luxury by conning actual rich people - in the end going to prison on charges of attempted grand larceny, larceny in the second degree, and theft of services. In reality she was no heiress, really the daughter of a truck driver and a convenience store owner. She used forged documents, carefully planned cons and her unshakeable charisma to get away for years with her crimes.
Netflix purchased the rights to her story, which much of the money paid to her going direct to her creditors, and thus the limited series was born. Whilst it has been criticised a bit for its uneven tone (are we meant to be rooting for her or against her?!) Anna Chlumsky and Julia Garner are fantastic in the main roles, and with Shonda Rhimes at the helm it was always guaranteed to be gripping from start to finish.
