At the time of its initial run, Star Trek wasn't really seen as a massive commercial success. In fact, it wasn't until years after it finished, when how TV ratings are analysed was drastically overhauled, that the true extent of its popularity was laid bare. Paramount, who'd just inherited the rights, began scrambling around to cash in on this overlooked goldmine.

Between the Original Series ending and The Motion Picture hitting cinemas, dozens of ideas were pitched, workshopped or even partially produced, but the most prominent (and indeed the one that most of the ideas ended up funneling into) was Star Trek: Planet Of The Titans. A time-travel movie that would pit the crew of the Enterprise against The Cygnans, hurtling them through a black hole and back to the very dawn of man.

Several rewrites took place, and the final script centered around the crew realising that man was never meant to develop the way it had. It fell to them to either give their early ancestors the gift of fire, ensuring history would unfold as they remembered, or refusing to intervene and, thus, condemning the human race to eventual extinction.
