10 Shocking New Doctor Who Era Cliffhangers
1. Surprise Regeneration (The Stolen Earth)
Russell T Davies decided to go all out for the Series 4 finale. In many ways, it became a celebration of the revived era, and the contributions he’d made to Doctor Who. Not only did we see the return of all the major characters he’d created (minus Sarah Jane Smith), we also saw the first major crossover of the various Doctor Who projects ongoing at the time.
The icing on the cake was the almighty return of the Daleks. Sure, this was a given by this point, as Russell T Davies enjoyed bringing them back each year in a big way. Accompanying them this time was their evil creator, Davros, who hadn’t been seen on screen since 1988. Twenty seven planets had been stolen, and Earth was being invaded, whilst the Doctor’s friends were lost without his presence.
After Harriet Jones sacrificed herself to help the gang get the Tenth Doctor into the fight, we had a lovely sequence which saw the reunion of the Time Lord and Rose. Honestly, it was an emotional moment, regardless of the mushy implications. But like all great love stories, there’s always a tragedy, and this moment came with the Tenth Doctor being shot by a Dalek. This literally came out of nowhere, and it was utterly shocking, leaving you wondering whether or not we had a surprise regeneration on our hands.
