10 Shocking New Doctor Who Era Cliffhangers

5. Stranded At The End Of The Universe (Utopia)

Doctor Who Utopia Cliffhanger

The third series of the revival cleverly laid out its plans for the finale, building upon a neatly integrated story-arc revolving around the warning left behind by the Face of Boe. After ending up at the end of the universe, the Tenth Doctor, Martha, and a returning Captain Jack Harkness, found themselves helping out Professor Yana in saving the last of humanity.

Believing they will reach the mysterious ‘utopia’, the Time Lord aided Yana to complete the rocket launch to give humanity a fighting chance against the end of everything. Sadly, this kind old professor held a sinister secret that sent shivers down not only the audience's spines, but also the Tenth Doctor’s. His frightened reaction set up the scene perfectly, as Murray Gold’s music ramped up, and we heard some all-too familiar voices coming from the fob-watch Yana was holding.

It’s clear that he’s a Time Lord, and now his consciousness had returned to him, bringing along with it the shocking revelation of his true identity. Sir Derek Jacobi went from being a loving character, to the devil himself, crafting a sadistic portrayal of the Master, as he callously murdered his assistant Chantho. Despite being wounded in the process, the Master managed to regenerate into a younger, stronger form, and stole the TARDIS. With one final gloat, and a massive punch to the Tenth Doctor’s gut, the Master delivered an almighty defeat to his arch-nemesis, as he left the Doctor behind at the end of time itself.
