Halfway through the trailer, we see the High King of the Elves, Gil-galad, gazing at a shooting star hurtling across the sky. This clip only lasts two seconds but speaks volumes of the Noldorin Elf's fate.

During the Second Age, Gil-galad held the highest authority amongst the Elves, governing many lands throughout his 3,000-year reign, and harboured one of the three Elven Rings of Power. It was he that formed The Last Alliance of Elves and Men, who made their final stand against Sauron. Even though the Elf warrior fought ferociously against the Dark Lord, he was ultimately killed.

So, how is this connected to the shooting star? Well, Gil-galad is considered such a beacon of hope, his death is compared to the heavens losing a star. This is referenced in The Fellowship of the Ring when Samwise sings about Gil-galad, saying the line, "for into darkness fell his star, in Mordor where the shadows are". Not only that, Gil-galad's name literally translates into "Star of Radiance".

Even though Gil-galad will play a major part in the story, it is his destiny not to see it to the end.
