Returning director Jonathan Frakes confirmed that filming on Picard's second season is expected to kick-off in February 2021. Terry Matalas is taking over for Michael Chabon as showrunner, though Chabon will remain as an executive producer and writer. The show is set to explore Picard's story in relation to his new synthetic body, along with the ongoing Romulan refugee crisis.

The main cast, bar Harry Treadaway, are returning, though Jeri Ryan is billed as guest star. Whoopi Goldberg will return as Guinan, while Robert Picardo indicated he had been approached to appear in this season, though he later stressed there was nothing concrete. LeVar Burton also hinted he may be reprising his role from The Next Generation as well.

Chabon originally expressed interest in having Orla Brady and Jamie McShane return as Laris and Zhaban respectively, which we feel is essential. Brent Spiner, though confirming his days as Data are done, also expressed interest in returning as Dr. Altan Inigo Soong. Chabon admitted that the creation of the character was to allow Spiner to return without having to don the white face paint.

There are no further details yet to the plot of the second season, though Patrick Stewart teased that there would be a new 'human element' in the season that would be explored. Come on, Geordi!
