Fire and Blood describes the Dance of Dragons as “a war unlike any other.” The war, also known as the Dying of the Dragons, was devastated the land, reduced the numbers of living Targaryens, and killed off most of the world’s living dragons.

House of Dragon has all the tools in place to do the book’s battle scenes justice on the small screen. Showrunner Ryan Condal has revealed that three Valyrian steel swords have been specially constructed for the show, including the Targaryen ancestral swords Blackfyre and Dark Sister. Showrunner Miguel Sapochnik is known for directing some of the original series’ award-winning, battle-focused episodes such as “Hardhome,” “The Long Night” (both of which featured battles between the living and the armies of the dead) and “Battle of the Bastards” (considered to be one of the best television episodes of all time).

The source material Fire and Blood details plenty of battles on land, sea, and air, providing the perfect template to build upon, particularly the novel’s depictions of dragon versus dragon skirmishes. The book also presents a variety of battles – from the intimate battles between family members such as the twin against twin fight between the Cargyll brothers (both of which have been cast for the series), members of the Kingsgaurd who supported opposite factions in the war, to massive battles resulting in hundreds of casualties.

The Dance of the Dragons was catastrophic and devastated the Seven Kingdoms and House of Dragon is the perfect place to depict the sole civil war in history of Westeros.
