10 Things We Learned From Twin Peaks: The Return Part 7
1. FRRagments Of Memory
In another departure from the Roadhouse end credits gimmick, Part 7 drew to a close in the Double R diner.
Just as Cooper's memory of his former life flooded back to him at a crucial time, it was here - just as it was thought, with the seemingly endless excursions and unfollowable influx of new characters, that we never would return - that we did return, briefly, alongside our unwittingly intrepid protagonist.
It was sensational filmmaking from Lynch. It was a nothing scene in which we were privy to only the faintest glimpse of plot. A man enters the diner and asks if anybody has seen a "Billy". Otherwise, it was simply a faint memory of a bygone time, similar to that experienced by Cooper, situating us in the shoes he lost on the way to his new reality. A beaming Shelly served coffee. A giggling Heidi collected menus. The townspeople ate and chatted, soundtracked by what sounded like a new, woozy, 1950s-sounding Angelo Badalamenti composition.
Before that, we did pay a visit to the Bang Bang bar; deviating from the tell-don't-show maxim of the preceding hour, an unnamed barman swept the floor, gathering disparate pieces of debris and sweeping them together.
They're coming. Lynch is taking his time, but he is reassuring us of that.
