10 Things We Want To See On The X-Files: Albuquerque
3. Eddie Van Blundht
The H is silent.
Eddie Van Blundht, portrayed by long-time X-Files writer Darin Morgan, appeared in season four's "Small Potatoes" in 1997, and has since become one of the X-Files more iconic Monster of the Week characters. Especially among the show's comedic episodes.
The episode, and character, were the brainchild of future Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. Van Blundht, a down-on-his-luck, bumbling janitor, happens to have the ability to shapeshift into just about any human being he wants. So what does he do with this incredible talent? He disguises himself as Luke Skywalker and knocks up his Star Wars obsessed high school sweetheart. And several other women attending a fertility clinic where Van Blundht is employed.
Oh, and he also was born with a tail. Resulting in his offspring bearing that rather distinct deformity.
Fans will no doubt remember Van Blundht's attempt to romance Agent Scully while impersonating Fox Mulder. That scene fueled any number of fan fiction efforts for those obsessed with what was then called the MSR (Mulder-Scully Relationship).
Morgan's comedic timing in the episode was wonderful, and what might have come off as disturbing managed to be played up for laughs. While that probably wouldn't fly in 2020, a reworked, reformed Van Blundht is just the sort of character The X-Files: Albuquerque could use. He's a B-villain, if a villain at all. The new show centers on the B-team. It's a perfect match.
