10 Times Doctor Who Became The Weirdest Drama On TV

10. The Mind Robber

Patrick Troughton's final season as the Second Doctor saw all the stops pulled out, with The Krotons and The Space Pirates just some of the crazy delights on offer. But when it came to the truly outlandish, one entry topped the lot, as the "cosmic hobo" stumbled into a realm beyond reality in The Mind Robber. It's tough to know where to begin - the kids could no doubt handle giant clockwork soliders and rogue unicorns. Less easy to process perhaps were the TARDIS shattering to pieces in a void and surreal comic book character The Karkus. His painted on nipples and voice like a chicken with an egg lodged in its backside must have made viewers wonder whether the show had finally lost the plot. Of course as the setting was The Land Of Fiction, plot became key. The various storybook elements gave Troughton his most distinctive adventure, but the part of the puzzle that takes first prize for daffiness is Jamie's face swap. Actor Frazer Hines being unavailable, the production team decided to simply bring in another actor and make his weird transformation a feature of the narrative. Hamish Wilson had his moment of the sun as the young McCrimmon, though it wasn't long before Hines returned to continue the mind-boggling journey!
