10 Times Star Trek Reused Footage And Hoped You Wouldn't Notice

5. Bird Of Prey Flying Toward The Sun - Star Trek IV/Redemption Part 2

There are several stand-out shots from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Man of them in fact revolve around the HMS Bounty, the captured Bird-of-Prey from the previous installment. As the ship was relatively new in this film, director Leonard Nimoy opted to give the audience quite a few nicely detailed, close-up shots of the vessel. One such shot comes just before she enters time warp.

Though short, the camera holds on to the vessel as it approaches, blasts by, and heads directly toward the sun. This shot is then lifted from the movie and dropped into the opening moments of Star Trek: The Next Generation's fifth season, Redemption part 2. However, this is one of the more successful uses of existing footage.

The movies and the various television series were visually quite different in how they shot the filming models. While there had been plenty of nice views of Klingon ships before this, this insertion of the film's footage actually helps to start the series with a bang. It's big, it's nice and clear, and it doesn't detract from the scene, knowing that it's been taken from another context.
