It's hard to think of anything from the past 25 years that has proved to be a TV phenomenon on the scale Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Its popularity remains sky high and the fandom is alive and strong, from fan-fiction to wild character theories. Joss Whedon's show, resulting from the misgivings of the 1992 film of the same name, rewrote the rules of what TV could be like and left an impact on how studios would target young adult audiences that would last for decades. It let TheWB, a relatively young network at the time, punch well above its weight in the ratings.

It's charm, characters and storylines guarantee its enduring appeal. The expanded universe is alive and well, covering spin-offs, comics and books. It is a rich brand to suddenly come under the Disney mantle, arguably the most expansive addition to their name since Star Wars and Marvel. And it is not over yet. In 2018, a new spin-off of the show was announced, with Monica Owusu-Breen at the helm.

Buffy's popularity could be enough on its own to attract people to Disney+. The ever-present appeal of the show is the latest weapon in their arsenal of new content.
