Star Trek is supposed to be hyper-futuristic, with technology that's lightyears ahead of the stuff we have in the present day - which is why this moment in the original 1960s series stands out as being particularly unusual.

In the season three episode The Lights Of Zetar, there's a scene at the 48:00 mark where Spock, McCoy, and Kirk are speaking about the events of the story, and through the open doorway behind them, clear as day, is a discarded newspaper just lying on the floor.

Now sure, we have seen newspapers in Star Trek on other occasions, but this isn't one that was supposed to be in the shot. Apparently, in this case, one of the crew members accidentally left it behind, resulting in this small moment of carelessness making its way onto the screen.

Not content with its initial cameo, the newspaper also returns at the 49:00 mark, delivering an incredibly memorable performance in just a few seconds of screen time.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
