When a more expensive production goes out to shoot on the streets of a city, the filmmakers will often have complete control over every aspect of the scene. A section of road will be cordoned off, allowing the director to pepper the area with their own extras, vehicles, and various other design flourishes.

On the other hand, the 1957 TV series Decoy was definitely not an expensive production, and for many of the shots that were filmed on the bustling streets of New York, the production had no control over what was happening in the background of the frame.

For example, take the 30th episode, The Gentle Gun-Man, which features a short scene where protagonist Patricia Jones walks past a delicatessen. As she does so, there are two men in the background having the time of their lives, goofing around with an empty pram on the right side of the frame.

Decoy is remembered for offering a genuine view of 1950s NYC street life, and as such, it's widely believed that this moment was unwittingly captured by the crew on the day.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
