10 TV Shows That Were Unexpectedly Resurrected
2. The X-Files
Often it seems that the last ditch attempt to revive interest in a television show - or to wrap up its story - is through a movie. It's often easier to get a low budget, one-off movie off the ground than to try and fund an entire season. Which is why the critical and commercial failure of 2008's The X-Files: I Want To Believe led most fans to believe the show was dead for good.
The film performed poorly at the box office, with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson speculating that the release of The Dark Knight the week before had negatively effected its return. Series creator and film director Chris Carter had also stated that the future of the series was mostly tied up in I Want To Believe's box office performance, furthering the likelihood of its demise.
Nevertheless in January 2015 Fox Television Group CEO Gary Newman announced that, despite fan petitioning for a third film, the series was to be resurrected as a six episode limited run, harking back to the roots of the shows while attempting to bring The X-Files into the modern age. It aired earlier this year, with mixed results.
Whether or not there'll be another season remains to be seen.
