6. Penny Dreadful
Showtime's 19th century chiller centres on Vanessa Ives and her supernatural abilities. Filled to the brim with madness and monsters, Penny Dreadful brings figures from classic Gothic fiction to the forefront such as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein's monster, Dorian Gray and Dracula.
For 3 seasons, you get to watch Vanessa and co. butt heads with the forces of evil in dark, often brutal fashion. The series is superbly shot with masterful attention paid also to the costuming, hair and make-up. The cast is wickedly good with excellent work from Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Rory Kinnear and an especially Satanic take on Dracula by Christian Camargo.
Atmospheric and suitably macabre, Penny Dreadful goes from strength to strength with its suspenseful, blood-soaked drama, eccentric characters and exciting locations. While Penny Dreadful was sadly not brought back for a season 4, season 3 ends on an epic enough note to be a satisfactory conclusion. It was recently revived with an L.A. set spin-off suitably titled Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Maybe Showtime just really like hurting creator John Logan given that one didn't make it past season 1.
