10 Unsung TV Characters Who Completely Save Their Show

8. The Governor - The Walking Dead

The Characters Everyone Talks About: Rick, Daryl As fantastic as post-apocalyptic, zombified thriller The Walking Dead is, Rick Grimes is rather a dull protagonist, and wife Lori wasn't that much more likeable either. It's effortlessly cool Daryl who's probably the best loved one of the bunch: he's developed the most as a character, and he's easily the most interesting. But resident baddie, the Governor, is just as fascinating himself. He has an air of vulnerability about him, and even when the show's at its bluntest - sometimes a show about zombies needs to be one-track - David Morrissey still manages to give a multi-layered and unhinged performance. It's a strange juxtaposition that the villain, the coldest and most egotistical man in the show, longs to be the salvation of the human race, but still looks after his undead daughter, kidding himself that she's still human, just diseased; it's a conflict of character that Morrissey manages to pull off extraordinarily though, and since he first appeared in the third series, it's seemed like the series couldn't continue without him. After all, every TV show needs a good old-fashioned villain; after the endless heaps of zombies of course.
