This theory is based almost exclusively on events that haven't yet happened in the TV series, so read ahead at your own peril!Summary: As recounted by Melisandre on multiple occasions, the legendary hero Azor Ahai wielded the flaming sword Lightbringer in order to bring the end to an ancient evil. She also prophesies that Azor Ahai will be reborn soon, and many fans believe that person to be Jon Snow, not Stannis Baratheon. Reasoning: In the prophecy, Azor Ahai is reborn "amidst smoke and salt." When Jon Snow is stabbed by members of the Night's Watch, Bowen Marsh's tears provide the salt, and Snow's wounds produce smoke. Other evidence that's been cited to support this theory is Jon's dream of fighting the Others with a red, burning sword. On another occasion, Melisandre looked into her fires for visions of Azor Ahai, she can only see things relating to Jon Snow. Likelihood: If the Azor Ahai prophecy were to ever come true, it seems that Jon Snow is probably the most likely candidate. However, it's not really George R. R. Martin's style for prophecies to be that straight forward, and characters making disastrous mistranslations has been a recurring theme throughout the series. If Jon Snow were to be reborn as Azor Ahai, it probably wouldn't be quite as clean cut as him being a magical warrior that leads armies to victory against the White Walkers.
