This theory is based almost exclusively on events that haven't yet happened in the TV series, so read ahead at your own peril!Summary: This theory is linked with several other theories that are based on both speculation and confirmed information. A strongly held belief among many readers is that the order of Maesters have long been working in secret to rid the world of magic, and that in doing so they have changed the natural order of things. The end of the series will portray the consequences of this, and possibly a climactic clash to restore balance. Reasoning: Dragons have been shown to have an influence on magic. Ever since the birth of Daenerys' dragons, magic appears to have become more prevalent and stronger throughout the world. The original Targaryen dragons were said to have become weaker and died off thanks to being cooped up over the years, which led to a decline in magic (and is possibly linked to the erratic seasons). This theory suggests that the order of Maesters actually poisoned the dragons over the years, ensuring that each creature was weaker than the last. The process was gradual so as to avoid suspicion. The Others were, for some reason or another, unhappy with the attempts to stifle magic, leading to them raising an army and heading south. Some believe that the resulting clash will be an attempt by the Others to restore balance between the 'Ice' (Others) and 'Fire' (Dragons/R'hllor). Likelihood: It certainly seems like the Maesters are up to something. Several characters in the series such as Lady Dustin are suspicious of the order, and how much influence they can have over many of the houses. What exactly their intentions are remains to be seen, but it's probable that Samwell Tarly will be uncovering some truths in his upcoming chapters in Oldtown.
