Katee Sackhoff's portrayal of classic swashbuckling ace pilot Starbuck quickly became one of Battlestar Galactica's most iconic roles. Thus, Starbuck's rather untimely death during the 17th episode of season three was heartbreaking for many fans.

However, the showrunners decided to do something quite unexpected. They brought Starbuck back from the dead with no real explanation. Immediately fan forums were overrun with theories about this "new" Starbuck.

Most leaned towards this Starbuck being some sort of Cylon creation, perhaps even being a hybrid of sorts. However, the show never actually gave its fans a proper answer, even in the series finale.

Instead, Starbuck just miraculously returns from the dead, leads the surviving humans to our Earth, and then disappears after a final conversation with Apollo.

The fan theories on Starbuck are enough to create a list of their own, but one of the most interesting is that Starbuck didn't die when flying into the wormhole that "killed" her in season three.

Instead, this fan theory proposes that she traveled through time, appearing in season three episode 20 after going through the wormhole and creating a paradox of sorts that resolved itself after Starbuck led humanity to Earth.

Time travel is always a fickle topic to tackle in any movie or TV show, and most creators tend to explain the concept differently in whatever way will best fit their story. While this is a relatively grounded theory regarding Starbuck's apparent survival, it also raises more questions than answers.
