10 Worst Doctor Who Villains
3. Mr Clever
This is another entry which completely baffles me. Considering Nightmare in Silver was written by Neil Gaiman, it shocks me that we received such an underwhelming instalment for not only The Doctor, but worst of all the Cybermen. Frankly, I don't think the cybernetic creatures have had a good story in New Who since their resurrection in Rise of the Cybermen and The Age of Steel. Since then, they've gone from bad to worse.
Naturally, it was the hope that Gaiman may be the solution to their failure. However, his creative decisions were very odd, almost as if he didn't understand the Cybermen at all, or he thought he was writing for a completely different monster entirely. The icing on the cake was Mr Clever, the Cyber Planner that latches itself onto the Eleventh Doctor.
This enemy was a strange addition to an already mix-bag narrative, given the entity held no resemblance to a Cyberman whatsoever. For starters, it had too much emotion and charisma, which is unbecoming of a Cyberman (i.e. emotionless cybernetic monstrosities). Maybe its connection to The Doctor altered it, but even then it's a massive stretch of the imagination to consider this thing a product of the Cybermen, forcing Matt Smith to undergo a confusing performance.
Had it been a completely different alien computer, then perhaps this would be a different story, but as it stands, Mr Clever fails on every level, and brings more shame to the baffling concepts applied to this once iconic foe.
