4. The Problem With A Poo
This episode came from the twenty-second season and was a sign that the series was starting to enter its dwindling years. It pushes so much into its narrative but ultimately has very little to say about cancel culture, despite the topic being so on-brand for the show.
The Problem With A Poo centres on the controversy caused by Mr Hankey The Christmas Poo after his failed attempts to justify his outrageously offensive tweets. He tries to distract people from his non politically correct humour, but ultimately makes things worse and come the end is banished from the town. He then moves to Springfield, and as the stereotypically offensive character Apu welcomes him with open arms, a banner reads #cancelthesimpsons.
Mr Hankey is one of the more problematic characters in the show, as he works in minor appearances, but when he's a central figure, it doesn't get the laughs. This attempt to satirise cancel culture also doesn't make a good point, as there is no real statement made in favour of either side of the debate, and while the shocking ending is provocative, it doesn't feel well placed and comes across as cheap.
