11 Bizarre '90s Cartoons That Only Ran One Season
4. Bucky O'Hare
The synergy between video games and cartoon shows is the kind of perfect match that marketing reps and advertisers talk about when they're trying pump up their team. Even notable failures like the horrendously bad LJN licensed games of the eighties managed to turn a profit. In keeping with tradition, Marvel and Sunbow presented you with Bucky O'Hare, adapted from the cult comic book series.
Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars as it was properly titled followed the anthropomorphic space rabbit as he fought in the eponymous battles with his ragtag crew. The show debuted in 1991, with some interesting changes to its source material. The comic was set in an alternate universe. The show was as well, though it was called the Aniverse and other characters had accents changed.
Unfortunately, the Hasbro-produced show lasted only thirteen episodes. The Komani game, which is more in keeping with the comic, was more successful. An arcade console also released, which featured the original voice cast of TV show, was also a hit.
There's no real explanation to the show's failure. Anthropomorphic, flying alien rabbits seemed like a concept that would sell like hotcakes given its competition involved a group of mutated turtles with teen angst and ninja skills. One theory might be its proximity to a similarly themed project known as Starfox.
