11 Doctor Who Rumours That Turned Out To Be Complete Twaddle
9. The Meddling Monk
As some younger/newer fans of the revived series might now know, the Meddling Monk is a Time Lord and a former friend of the Doctor's who went on to become one of his adversaries (sound familiar? The Master wasn't the first to go bad, you know!) when he decided to become a renegade and stole a TARDIS to interfere in the events of history for his own amusement. Whatever floats your boat. To date he has only appeared in two serials, The Time Meddler and The Daleks' Master Plan, alongside William Hartnell as the First Doctor but Classic Series fans have long been calling for him to return. They very almost got their wish back in 2009 - that is, if the tabloids are to be believed - when it was reported that he'd be returning to wreak more havoc opposite David Tennant's Tenth Doctor in a timey-wimey two parter featuring the Daleks who, let's face it, at this point pretty much go to the opening of an envelope. And who would've played the new incarnation of the malevolent Monk in all his time-interfering glory? None other than cult legend Sir Patrick Stewart who has already left his mark on sci-fi history for his iconic portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek. Apparently he was more than up for it, too, after forming a close friendship with David Tennant during their stint together in the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2008 production of Hamlet. In 2010 Peter responded to the rumours - at a Star Trek convention, of all places - by confirming that the ship had probably sailed. It's probably good that he didn't appear, anyway. The entire stratosphere of the fandom would've probably imploded.
