11 TV Characters Killed Off Far Too Soon

1. Jimmy Darmody - Boardwalk Empire

Opie Winston
HBO

Back in the early days of Terrence Winter's prohibition crime drama, Jimmy Darmody was the fan favourite young criminal who seemed destined to be a series mainstay. Played brilliantly by Michael Pitt and bringing the show some its best moments in the first two seasons, Jimmy was a complex young man with the potential of becoming a bigger character as the series progressed.

However, after he betrays Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) and tries to make amends throughout the last episode of Season Two, it becomes quickly clear that Jimmy is a doomed soul.

In revenge for his betrayal, Nucky shoots his former friend and protege twice in the head, instantly signalling a new era for the show's tone and characters. Whilst the death itself makes for an explosive and intense scene, and finally sees Nucky giving up on being just "half a gangster", it seems as though Jimmy still had a long way to go.

It would have been nice to see him stick around. His complexities were still growing, he was still young and naive, and his potential to be so much more than a brash wannabee mobster was brimming with possibilities.

Unfortunately, this is a character angle we never got to see, and though the rest of the show remained high-class drama with an awful lot to love, Jimmy's presence in later seasons could have made it even better.
