If you've been on the internet in the past decade, you might have come across the "you missed the point by idolising them" starter pack. It consists of characters like Rick Sanchez, Walter White, The Joker and more, all of whom are terrific characters, but ones who you should know are wrong in their actions. Well, Light Yagami is the anime poster boy for this trend.

As the protagonist in the gloomy and macabre world of Death Note, Light matches that energy by being morally corrupt. He uses the titular Death Note (under the moniker Kira) with the "noble" intention of creating a better world. Still, his god complex and willingness to kill innocent people show that, really, he's just a monster with unlimited power.

However, although the boy is clearly making immoral decisions, his incredibly high intellect, intricate plans and dedication to his goal make him so fascinating that you can't help but root for him. His schemes as Kira and the double-life he lives turn the show into a thrilling ride, and you want to see just how far he can go.

This anime is a textbook example of how the protagonist of a series can also be a villain of pure evil.
