12 Best Character Arcs In The Walking Dead

3. Rick Grimes

Maggie The Walking Dead
Gene Page/AMC

The main man himself, in a lot of ways Rick Grimes has had the most conventional character arc on the show, but that doesn't make it any less impressive. He started the show waking from a coma, unaware of the what's happened and desperate to find his family. He was moral, clean-cut and hopeful.

After finding his family, though, this began to change. As his best friend Shane began to slip into madness, Rick started to question his relationships and his moral code, which ended in him killing Shane. Later, Lori died giving birth to Shane's baby, and Rick became unhinged. Though he eventually came back from the brink, these events forever changed him.

Many of his leadership decisions didn't pay off, but he still kept the group together through their pains, and after battling The Governor, being kidnapped by cannibals and losing faith and trust in humanity, he managed to stop himself from completely cracking under the pressure of the new world, and brought numerous communities together for a more peaceful future.

Rick was dark and violent, but a good man and leader at heart, and though he's gone from the show, his spin-off films promise some more effective development.
